after school learning academy

Where children are safe and learning is fun!
Fifty weeks a year during after school hours, school holidays, and during the summer, the YWCA Afterschool Learning Academy offers 215 school-aged children a comprehensive program at six locations throughout Fulton (Cook, Morningside, and Springdale Elementary) and DeKalb Counties (Pleasantdale Elementary, Hightower Elementary, and Shamrock Middle), including our Northeast Intown location.
Monday through Friday from 2:30p.m. to 6:30 p.m., our youth are offered a variety of educational and recreational activities. This creative program is a unique blend of learning and fun that builds on each child's individual talents.
Staffed by trained professionals, our programs offer the Pinnacle curriculum and a classroom environment that promotes children's creative, social, physical and intellectual development. Participants are encouraged to grow and develop by engaging in a range of effective curriculum-based and age-appropriate activities that focus on academic enrichment, community service, communication strategies, nutrition, fitness recreation, and meaningful conversation. What Parents Say
The YWCA is a positive force in many communities and one main reason for the organization's success must be the people who represent it.
Raquel Hackley
I have nothing but praise for the quality of the program. The teachers have been uniformly excellent. The staff has been courteous and professional, and I am impressed with how well the program has adjusted over the years to the changing needs of my children. They feel very much a part of the YWCA community and I know you have been an integral part of that effort. Thank you for your efforts and professionalism.
Christopher J. York
I just wanted to thank you for including my child in your summer program. It is so great for me to have a place that he can go and have fun despite his disability. Your staff deserves a big pat on the back for loading him and his wheel chair into the van and taking him along on your daily fieldtrips. I honestly don’t know what I would do if I didn’t have you all at the YWCA!
Crystal Costello
The program focuses attention on the talents and strengths of the individual student. During the year they hold special programs for friends and parents highlighting the talents of the children. Extra effort is taken to make sure that all children are included as part of the performances. No child is left out. We recommended this program to the school system and hope that what has proven to be a very productive partnership will continue to the benefit of the students and their families. We doubt there is any better program in the system today. The commitment of the staff to the well being of the whole child is truly remarkable.
Herbie J. Lanoux
The staff and teachers are compassionate, interactive with the children and have firm rules. Upon arrival to the ywca, a healthy snack is served, homework is done and once instruction is completed then, the children may read a book and play. When I or my husband arrives to pick our daughter up, we often find the children exercising and/or engaged in a fun game.
