What is the mission of the YWCA of Greater Atlanta?
Founded in 1902, the YWCA of Greater Atlanta is dedicated to eliminating racism and empowering women. We fulfill our mission with programs of advocacy and unity for Atlanta’s women and girls. Strengthened by diversity, the YWCA of Greater Atlanta draws together people who strive to create opportunities for women’s growth and leadership. The organization fosters a common vision of peace, justice, freedom and dignity for all people.
How does the organization operate?
We are a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. The Board of Directors oversees the governance of the organization under the direction of the Board Chair. The Chief Executive Officer and the senior management team execute the plans and policies of the board of directors and manage all aspects of operations.
Is the YWCA of Greater Atlanta part of a larger YWCA movement?
Yes, the YWCA is the oldest women’s organization in the world and can be found in 122 countries serving millions of women in 300 communities nationwide in 9 regions providing an array of diverse programs and services.
When was the YWCA founded?
In 1855, the first YWCA was established in London, England. The United States developed its first chapter in 1858. The first National Board was established in 1906.
The YWCA of Greater Atlanta was founded in 1902 by a small group of women on the campus of Spelman College with the mission to help “working girls, middle-class daughters, young wives and mothers and princesses”.
Is the YWCA organization only for women?
No. While it was started by women for women to help strengthen families and the community through its programs and focus, the YWCA is inclusive. It always has been and always will be.
What’s the difference between the YWCA and the YMCA?
The YWCA and YMCA are not affiliated in any way. The YWCA is committed to empowering women and eliminating racism. We take a woman-focused approach to issues and services we offer because when women thrive, families thrive. Read the YWCA USA statement The Tale of Two Y’s.
Is the YWCA Early Learning Academy open to the community?
Our Early Learning Academy is open to the public and is comprised of 150 children from the ages of 6 weeks to 5 years of age.
Does the YWCA of Greater Atlanta have a gym?
Some local associations have fitness classes, programs and facilities as part of their programs. Our location is not one that provides a gym, pool or fitness classes.
How is the organization funded?
The YWCA is funded primarily through government grants, corporations, foundations, individuals, special events and some fee based programs.

How can I make a contribution to the YWCA of Greater Atlanta?
The YWCA of Greater Atlanta a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. All contributions are tax-deductible to the extent allowed by the law.
We accept individual gifts, corporate and foundation gifts, stock gifts, legacies and bequests, matching gifts, United Way designations and in-kind contributions, such as printing, professional services or property.
