October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month: ENCOREplus Annual Tea

October marks Breast Cancer Awareness Month, a time when communities come together to raise awareness about the disease and advocate for life-saving screenings and treatment. In Georgia, breast cancer remains a serious concern. According to recent data from the American Cancer Society, nearly 9,800 women in the state of Georgia are estimated to be diagnosed with breast cancer, and over 1,400 are expected to die this year. Breast cancer remains the second leading cause of cancer death among women. Although breast cancer is almost 98% survivable when detected early, Black women have a 38% higher mortality rate. This statistic underscores the importance of early detection, education, and support.  

In response to this ongoing health crisis, YWCA Greater Atlanta’s ENCOREplus program is committed to making a difference. For more than twenty years, EncorePlus has provided women—especially those from underserved communities—with critical breast health education and access to free screening mammograms, ensuring early detection for those who need it most.  

To further support this work, EncorePlus is hosting its annual "Pink with a Purpose" Breast Cancer Awareness Tea at YWCA Greater Atlanta. This year’s tea, generously sponsored by Emory Healthcare, will be a gathering of breast cancer survivors, community advocates, and medical professionals. The keynote speaker for this year’s event will be Dr. Ryland Gore, a leading Atlanta breast surgical oncologist, who will share insights into the current state of breast cancer and advancements in breast cancer. 

This Tea is not just about raising awareness—it is about taking action. Attendees will hear powerful testimonials from survivors, participate in discussions with advocates, and learn more about the resources available through EncorePlus. Each story shared will serve as a reminder that breast cancer affects all of us, and through our collective efforts, we can have a positive impact.
